The problem for many players is that there are no Pokémon characters nearby – or not enough of the coveted rare ones. The characters are located at specific GPS coordinates, ranging from supermarkets and cafes to churches and riverbanks. Pokémon GO is an augmented reality game that sends players to real-life locations to capture virtual Pokémon characters or engage in battles with other players. However, some individuals are cheating to gain an advantage in the smartphone-based game by interfering with its GPS-based geolocation functions. Despite only launching a few days ago, Pokémon GO's creators are already facing an army of determined "spoofers," according to an article in Motherboard.
